In the Heights is a diverse show set in Washington Heights, New York City, conceived by the creator of Hamilton. Actors of all ages, race and body type are encouraged to audition. Due to the nature of the show, some roles are specific to certain ethnicities and to respect the nature of the play, we will make best attempts to cast as such.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PRODUCTION WAS CAST IN MARCH OF 2020 BEFORE COVID SHUT DOWN THE WORLD. We are holding additional auditions to fill roles by individuals who are no longer able to be in this production.
PRINCIPALL ROLES TO BE FILLED:
CARLA: (Latina, Reads 20s-30s, vocal part F3-E5) In her mid-twenties to early thirties, she is a hairdresser at Daniela's Salon. Born and raised in Queens, she is a pure, sweet, innocent, and loving woman who is devoted to her family and friends though she is easily taken advantage of because of her naivety. She and Daniela are best friends. Strong belt mix. Should be an excellent mover.
PIRAGUA GUY - (Latino, tenor D3-A4) good hearted, he walks the hot and humid streets of Washington Heights selling piraguas (flavored ice shavings) to earn a living. He represents a rhythm of the islands in the big city.
CAMILIA ROSARIO: (Alto G3-E5, Latina, Reads 40s) In her forties, no-nonsense, strong-willed, she is the co-owner of Rosario Car and Limousine with her husband Kevin. Also from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, she fell in love with Kevin at 19 and immigrated with him to New York City. She is cool-headed yet keeps a subtle but strong leash on Kevin. Her daughter Nina has just returned for the summer from her first year at Stanford. Singing actor who moves well.
GRAFFITI PETE: (Reads late teens to 20s, BIPOC) Must be an extremely strong dancer. Acro a plus. An 18-year old graffiti artist and the nemesis of Usnavi, he is always hanging out on the streets, dancing to his boom box music, spraying any surface he can. Usnavi is unhappy that Sonny and Graffiti Pete are friends because Graffiti Pete epitomizes everything that Usnavi hopes that Sonny will not grow up to be.
SINGERS AND DANCERS:
We are looking for strong singers and dancers for this production. Whether you consider yourself a dancer who can carry a tune or a singer who can move, we want to see you. Performers with strengths in Hip-Hop, Latin and Break Dances as well as rap or spoken word are especially encouraged to audition.
Please prepare 16-32 bars of a song (in your key) that showcases your voice.
Bring sheet music; a pianist will be provided.
No acapella or recorded music.
Wear or bring proper dance attire (no sandals or flip-flops).
Bring Character/Jazz Shoes.
Bring a current resume and headshot if you have them.
After everyone sings there will be a short dance audition. There will not be time to change, so dress appropriately.
We typically rehearse Monday-Thursday from 6:00 - 10:00 PM and Saturday from 1:00 - 5:00 PM. A full rehearsal schedule will be provided at Auditions. As we get closer to the show dates, we may add Sunday rehearsal days. This is a high intensity show with a short rehearsal schedule.
Be prepared to provide any conflicts you may have during the rehearsal period. Some conflicts can be accommodated after the show is cast. Just be upfront and let us know.
No Conflicts starting July 17 – August 7
July 29, 30, 31 & August 5, 6, & 7
Currently we are scheduled to perform 6 evening shows, however, we have the potential to add additional matinee performances and/or a Thursday evening performance based on ticket sales.
